How to Fill Sparse Eyebrows Naturally With Gel Liner

Sparse brows are extremely common - from over-plucking years ago, from naturally fine hair, or from gaps that have always been there. The usual fix is a brow pencil, and pencils are fine, but they have a habit of looking drawn on: a solid block of colour with a hard edge.

There is another option that many people already have in their makeup bag: a gel eyeliner in dark brown, applied with an angled brush. Gel gives a softer, more hair-like stroke than most pencils, and a waterproof formula holds through heat and sweat. This guide walks through how to do it so the result looks like brows, not makeup.

One set, three uses: upper liner, lower lashes and brows.

Why gel works for brows

  • Hair-like strokes. With a fine angled brush you can draw individual strokes that mimic hairs, rather than a solid shape.
  • Buildable. Start sheer and add only where the gaps are.
  • Long-wearing. The FelinWel 2-in-1 Gel Eyeliner & Brow Set is waterproof and sweat-resistant, which matters in humid weather where brow powder can fade and pencil can smear.
  • Matching tones. Using the same product for liner and brows keeps your eye makeup in the same colour family.

Choosing the shade

For most people, dark brown is the right choice for brows. Even people with black hair usually have brows that look softer than their hair, and black liner on brows tends to look harsh and heavy. Natural black is best kept for the lash line.

A useful check: the brow colour should be close to the colour of your brow hairs at the roots, or very slightly lighter.

The right brush

The brush does more than the product here. You need a small, firm, angled brush with a thin edge - thick or fluffy brushes lay down a block of colour instead of strokes.

Two FelinWel angled brushes: an angled eyeliner brush with a thin head and a flat eyebrow brush for slender, evenly distributed lines
The flat eyebrow brush draws slender, evenly spaced strokes.

The angled eyeliner and brow brush set includes a flat eyebrow brush for this. A clean spoolie is also useful for brushing brow hairs and softening the result.

Step 1: map your brow

Before any product, find three points. Hold a straight brush handle against your face:

Point Line the brush up from Where the brush crosses the brow
Start The side of the nostril, straight up Where the brow should begin
Arch The side of the nostril, through the centre of the pupil The highest point of the brow
Tail The side of the nostril, through the outer corner of the eye Where the brow should end

These are guides, not rules. Your natural brow shape is usually the most flattering starting point - the aim is to fill it in, not redraw it.

Step 2: brush the hairs up

Brush the brow hairs upward and slightly outward with a spoolie. This shows you exactly where the gaps are and keeps the hairs out of the way of the brush.

Step 3: draw hair-like strokes

  1. Load very little product. Touch the brush to the gel once and wipe most of it off on the back of your hand. For brows, you want almost a dry brush.
  2. Start in the middle of the brow, not at the front. The middle and tail can take the most colour.
  3. Short, light flicks in the direction of the hair. Upward and outward at the front, outward along the body, and slightly downward toward the tail.
  4. Fill the gaps between hairs, not over them.
  5. Define the tail. A slightly firmer stroke along the lower edge of the tail gives the brow structure.
  6. Go lightest at the front. The start of the brow should be the softest part. A few upward strokes, no hard edge.

Step 4: soften

Brush through the whole brow with a clean spoolie. This blends the strokes into the hairs and removes any hard lines. If the front looks too strong, brush it upward a few more times.

Dark brown for brows, natural black for the lash line - one set covers both.

Step 5: make it last

Gel is long-wearing on its own, but brows sit right where the forehead sweats. For all-day wear in humid weather:

  • Start with brows that are free of moisturiser and oil. Wipe them with a clean cotton pad before filling.
  • Let the gel set for a minute before touching.
  • Finish your face with a mist of setting spray.

Common mistakes

  • Too much product: the most common reason brows look drawn on. Wipe the brush off more.
  • Drawing an outline first: outlines create a hard edge. Build from strokes instead.
  • A strong, square front: keep the start of the brow soft.
  • Using black: too harsh for most brows.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really use eyeliner on my eyebrows?

Yes, if it is a gel formula and you use a fine angled brush with very little product. The FelinWel set is designed as a 2-in-1 for liner and brows.

Is gel better than brow pencil?

It depends on what you want. Gel gives softer, hair-like strokes and wears well in heat. Pencil is quicker for a defined shape. Many people use gel for the gaps and a light pencil for the tail.

How do I fill in a gap where no hair grows?

Draw individual hair-like strokes across the gap in the direction the surrounding hairs grow, then soften with a spoolie. Several thin strokes look more natural than one thick one.

What if my gel is too dry for brows?

Brows actually need a drier brush than eyeliner. If the pot surface has hardened, a small mist of setting spray stirred in will soften it. Close the lid tightly after use.
