A high or wide forehead is common, and on its own it is not a problem. Where people notice it is in photos: pulled-back hair, bright overhead light or a straight-on camera angle can make the forehead take up more of the face than it does in person.
Forehead size is really a matter of proportion - how much space sits between the hairline and the brows compared with the rest of the face. Proportion is easy to adjust with makeup and hair. Here are five approaches, from the fastest to the most involved.

First: what makes a forehead look big?
| Cause | What it looks like | Best approach |
|---|---|---|
| High hairline | Long gap between hairline and brows | Fill the hairline, fringe |
| Sparse or thinning hairline | Hairline looks higher than it is | Hairline powder |
| Wide forehead / wide temples | Forehead looks broad | Contour at the temples, side-swept hair |
| Thin or high brows | More space above the eyes | Fuller brows |
| Tight, pulled-back styles | Entire forehead exposed | Softer styles around the face |
1. Fill in the hairline
This is the fastest and most effective trick, because it changes the proportion directly. Hairline powder shades the scalp between hairs at the front, which makes the hairline look lower and denser. Even a few millimetres make a visible difference to how long the forehead looks.

- Style your hair first so you can see where the hairline actually sits.
- Dab a small amount of Hairline Shadow Powder onto the puff.
- Press it along the existing hairline and into any sparse areas at the front and temples.
- Soften the lower edge with a brush so there is no line - it should fade into the forehead like the natural edge of a hairline.
The rule: work within and just at the edge of where hair grows. Drawing far below the real hairline looks obvious close up.
A slope-shaped hairline brush gives a more natural edge than the puff alone, because its bevelled shape follows the curve of the hairline.

Choose the shade by your root colour: 01# Dark Brown for dark hair tones, 02# Light Brown for lighter hair, 03# Natural Black for black hair. If you are between two, the lighter one looks more natural. Our hairline powder guide goes into shade matching in more detail.
2. Contour the edges of the forehead
Just as contour under the cheekbone creates a shadow, contour along the top and sides of the forehead makes it look smaller by making the edges recede.
- Use a soft, cool contour shade - the contour shade in the 4-in-1 Face Palette works well, applied lightly.
- With a fluffy brush, sweep it along the hairline and down the temples in a loose "C" shape.
- Blend it down into the forehead and up into the hair so there is no line.
This works best for a wide forehead. For a high forehead, filling the hairline (step 1) does more.

3. Balance with fuller brows
Thin, high brows leave more open space above the eyes, which makes the forehead look longer. Slightly fuller brows - filled on the upper edge as well as the lower - take up more of that space and rebalance the face.
Do not draw brows much higher than they naturally sit. Filling the upper edge a little is enough. See how to fill sparse eyebrows naturally for a step-by-step method.
4. Choose hairstyles that frame the forehead
- Curtain bangs or a soft fringe cover part of the forehead directly. Curtain bangs are the lowest-commitment option.
- Side-swept fringe or a deep side part covers one side of the forehead and breaks up its width.
- Face-framing layers starting at the cheekbones soften a wide forehead.
- Volume at the sides rather than on top - height at the crown adds to the length of the face.
5. Watch the styles that expose it
Tight high ponytails, slicked-back buns and severe centre parts show the whole forehead and every gap in the hairline. You do not have to avoid them, but they are when hairline powder matters most. If you wear them, fill the hairline first and smooth the baby hairs with a hair wax stick so the edge looks clean rather than sparse.
What not to do
- Do not use shimmer highlighter on the forehead - it makes it look larger and shinier. Keep highlight to the cheekbones.
- Do not draw the hairline far below where hair grows.
- Do not use a contour shade that is too dark or warm; it will look like a tan line.
Frequently asked questions
Can makeup really make a forehead look smaller?
Yes, by changing proportion. Filling the hairline shortens the visible forehead, contour makes the edges recede, and fuller brows reduce the open space above the eyes.
Is hairline powder obvious?
Not if the shade matches your roots and you blend the lower edge. It is designed to look like shadow at the base of the hair, and it washes out with shampoo.
What is the best fringe for a big forehead?
Curtain bangs suit most face shapes and are easy to grow out. A side-swept fringe works well for wide foreheads.
Does this work for men?
Yes. Hairline powder is particularly effective for receding temples, and the technique is the same.
