Tightlining: The Eyeliner Trick That Makes Small Eyes Look Bigger

If you have small eyes, monolids or hooded lids, you may have noticed that a thick line of eyeliner can make things worse. On the lid it disappears into the fold, and it takes up the space that shows when your eyes are open - so the eye can end up looking smaller, not bigger.

Tightlining is the fix a lot of makeup artists use instead. It adds definition exactly where the lashes grow, with little or no visible line on the lid. Done well, nobody can tell you are wearing liner at all - your eyes just look more awake and your lashes look thicker.

What tightlining is

Between the lashes there are small gaps where skin shows through. Tightlining fills those gaps with a dark colour so the lash line looks like one dense, dark edge.

The traditional method puts liner on the upper waterline - the inner rim of the upper lid, underneath the lashes. That is very effective, but it also puts product right next to the surface of the eye. A review of research on eye cosmetics found that eyeliner applied inside the lash margin moves into the tear film more readily than liner applied outside it (Clinical Optometry, 2018).

So in this guide we focus on a safer variation that gets almost the same result: working the liner into the roots of the lashes from above, without going onto the waterline itself.

Why it makes small eyes look bigger

  • No visible band on the lid. Thick liner on a small lid eats up the space you have. Root lining leaves the whole lid visible.
  • A denser lash line. Filling the gaps makes the lashes look thicker, which frames the eye.
  • Works with the fold. On monolids and hooded eyes, a line on the lid often disappears when the eye is open. Lash-root liner stays visible because it sits at the very edge.

What you need

  • A waterproof gel liner. Pencil can smudge and transfer onto the lower lid on oily or hooded eyes. The FelinWel Gel Eyeliner is waterproof and sweat-resistant, in dark brown or natural black.
  • A very thin, flat brush. This is not optional. A normal liner brush is too thick to press between lashes. The thin flat precision brush in the angled eyeliner and brow brush set is designed for fine work like this.
  • A mirror at chin height or below, so you look down into it and your lid stays open and still.

A thin, flat, angled tip is what lets you press liner between the lashes.

The lash-root method, step by step

  1. Clean hands, clean brush. You are working close to the eye. Wash your hands and use a brush that has been cleaned recently.
  2. Load the brush very lightly. Pick up a small amount of gel and wipe the excess on the back of your hand. The brush should look almost dry.
  3. Look down into the mirror. Tilt your chin up slightly and look down. The upper lashes and their roots become visible without pulling the lid.
  4. Press, do not draw. Starting from the outer corner, press the flat edge of the brush into the base of the lashes, then lift. Move a few millimetres inward and repeat. Small presses fill the gaps; long strokes leave a line on the lid.
  5. Wiggle into the gaps. A tiny side-to-side movement pushes the gel between the lashes.
  6. Stop before the inner corner for a softer, wider-eyed look, or continue to the inner third for more definition.
  7. Check with your eyes open. Look straight ahead. You should see a darker, fuller lash line and very little visible liner.
  8. Curl lashes and add mascara after the liner has set.

Adapting it for your eye shape

Eye shape What to do
Monolid Lash-root lining across the whole upper lash line; if you want a wing, draw it with your eyes open so it shows above the fold.
Hooded Lash-root lining plus a very thin line only on the outer third, drawn with eyes open.
Small, round Root lining on the outer two-thirds only; leave the inner corner bare to make the eye look wider.
Downturned Root lining with a tiny upward flick at the outer corner to lift the eye.

Do you line the lower lashes too?

For small eyes, usually not - a full lower line closes the eye in. If you want a little definition, use dark brown liner on the outer third of the lower lash line, pressed into the roots and softened with a clean brush.

Four uses of an angled brush: eyeliner, eyebrow, lying silkworm under-eye detail and concealer
The same small brush set covers lash-line work, brows and fine under-eye detail.

Safety notes

  • Do not apply liner to the waterline if your eyes are irritated, red or infected.
  • If you wear contact lenses, put them in before makeup and keep liner outside the lash line.
  • Wash liner brushes regularly and do not share eye makeup.
  • Remove eye makeup fully before sleep.
  • If you want to line the waterline itself, check that the product is suitable for that use and stop if you notice any discomfort.

Frequently asked questions

Does tightlining make eyes look bigger?

It makes the lash line look denser and the eye more defined without a thick line that takes up lid space - which on small eyes usually reads as bigger and more open.

Is tightlining safe?

Lining the waterline puts product next to the eye surface. The lash-root method in this guide keeps liner outside the lash margin, which reduces that contact.

Black or brown for tightlining?

Natural black looks like thicker lashes and suits most people with dark lashes. Dark brown is softer for lighter lashes or a more natural daytime look.

How do I stop it transferring onto my lower lid?

Use a waterproof gel liner, use very little, let it set before opening your eyes fully, and seal your makeup with a setting spray.
